Covington is a city in and the county seat of Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Covington was made on May 12, 1800 by Major John Sevier and his family from Savannah, Georgia. Sevier named his new town after Colonel James Covington (1764-1832), an officer in the American Revolutionary War who had helped defeat British forces at Saratoga. In 1802, Colonel Covington's son-in-law James Patton established a small trading post near present day Uniontown to serve as a winter stop on the Cumberland Trail. In 1812, Captain John Todd built a cabin on an old farmstead just east of modern day downtown Covington. A store and tavern were soon erected on this site and became known as "Todd's Tavern". By 1815, there were about 20 settlers living in Covington. In that year, General David Robertson founded the First Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry here with men from Tennessee and other states around the area to help protect against Indian attacks during the war for independence. Cincinnati entrepreneur William Hennepin purchased land north of downtown Covington in 1825 and began developing it into what is today's central business district called Hennepin Square. He named his square after one of his investors – Cincinnati lawyer Ephraim McDowell – who had played an important role in helping him succeed during these early years of Cincinnati’s growth. The initial development included brick buildings housing businesses such as stores, warehouses, churches and schools along with homes for many of its citizens who started moving into town during this time period called “The Prairie Village” boom period which lasted until about 1840 when most residents moved away because they found better opportunities closer to Cincinnati or becauseleton County changed hands several times resulting in little economic stability within the community).
