Covington, Kentucky is a city located in central Kentucky on the Ohio River. The population was 43,486 at the 2010 census. Covington was founded by Methodists in 1795 as a log cabin community. In 1814, it became the capital of what would become the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The arrival of railroads brought more people and businesses to the area during the early 20th century; however, most development stopped after World War II when aluminum production became dominant in nearby Jeffersonville. It remained an important community until World War II when it lost some of its economic importance due to post-war changes in Kentucky politics and culture. Afterward, however, it regained much of its former status as a vibrant community with strong cultural connections that has continued to thrive today
The area now known as Covington was once part of the much larger and more populous city of Cincinnati. The population of Cincinnati exploded in the early 19th century, thanks in part to the growth of a new industry: cotton ginning. With an increasing demand for raw cotton, farmers in Kentucky turned to this profitable crop. By 1825, Covington had become a thriving community, with a population of around 10,000 people. In 1851, Cincinnati experienced another boom time thanks to increased trade with other parts of the United States and Europe. As a result, many families moved to Covington looking for better opportunities. In 1881, when Louisville became the new capital of Kentucky, it merged with Cincinnati and all but eliminated any competition from Covington for jobs and social status within the city. Cincinnati's heyday came to an end after World War II when large numbers of residents left for better-paying jobs in cities like Indianapolis and Detroit. In recent years, however, some efforts have been made to revive aspects of downtown Covington including restoration of old buildings and hosting art demonstrations or music festivals throughout the year.
