The first known use of a gun sling in Covington, Kentucky was on October 3, 1868. A man named William Beech had an accident with his rifle and hit his head with the butt. As a result, he was comatose for eight weeks. His wife took him to the local doctor and he was given an injection that caused him to revive. He then went home and reported what happened to his wife who then made her way over to the armory where she found a gun sling and put it around Beech's neck.
Covington is a town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,759 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Jefferson County by a significant margin. The town straddles the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. The first Europeans to visit what is now Covington were French traders and missionaries in 1784 who named it "Le Bourgeois-Ville" (the Noble Village). In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded the towns of Paducah and Pikeville in present-day Jefferson County as part of his strategy to expand the American frontier. Wilkinson's vision called for settlers to move into open land east of the Allegheny Mountains and from there drive westward into what are now southern Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. In 1819, Englishman John Smith found coal near CADY Fork on what would become known as the Cumberland Coal Mine. He began an effort to develop this coal mine which would later be renamed Covington after him. As development around Cady Fork continued apace, however, Smith realized that he needed more space so he sold his interest in Covington to Samuel Hill in 1824. By 1830, over 2 miles (3 km) of railroad had been built within Covington limits making it one of America's earliest rail centers. Rapid growth during the Gilded Age created overcrowding problems with limited space for new residents and businesses; this led to several fires throughout Covington between 1881 and 1901 that resulted in extensive damage both inside and outside the community center including loss of life (see fire at Cady Fork Clubhouse). In 1902–03 developments occurred within Boundary Creek Township adjacent to modern day Covington when developers purchased 640 acres (240 ha) along present day Cumberland Avenue from Elijah Hicks for $5 million dollars which included a dam on Boundary Creek providing irrigation water for crops as well as other potential uses such as housing developments or shopping malls; these areas came to be known collectively as "The Highlands". During World War I various industries located within or near downtowns across America produced materials needed by military forces including munitions manufacturing plants such as Fort Knox munitions factory; automotive production plants such as Ford Motor Company's Willowbrook plant; machine tool factories like DeWitt Machine & Tool Co.'s Dayton Plant; rubber manufacturer Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Belvidere Plant; steel fabricators William Hodge Sons & Co.'s Weir Mill Shipbuilding Yard etc.; butchery firms like Brownells Meat Market Inc.'s Louisville plant also contributed produce locales served by Butchertown Market chain restaurants until 1984 when those stores closed down due lack of customers or competition from fast food restaurants Within city limits advances were made towards retail development with opening of The Gap store on Main Street followed by JCPenney Store on West Road In 1957 First National Bank opened up shop across from current athletic complex giving area its name today: "Coventry Street".

The early settlers were primarily Germans but over time they brought in other nationalities including Americans, Irish Catholics, Poles, Italians and Scots-Irish. The economy changed dramatically with World War II when millions of people came to work in munitions factories or join military units abroad. The impact on Covington was immense; both physically and emotionally. Many businesses were destroyed or moved away as a result of wartime competition and war production demands. Today, much of what used to be local manufacturing has been replaced by more international companies such as Siemens and BMW. Today's culture is reflective of its many years living within close proximity to major metropolitan areas: Cincinnati (the largest city), Louisville (the second largest city), Lexington (a historic capital), Pittsburgh (the thirdlargest city) and Indianapolis (home to Hoosiers). There are also numerous small towns throughout the country that are similar in size but have different histories because their residents chose not to move closer to larger cities during this era of rapid social change.
Covington was founded by the Kentucky Colonization Society in 1811. It was named after Captain John Covington, who explored and surveyed the area. The society aimed to settle freed slaves in what is now Kentucky.
