Covington, Kentucky is a small town in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, located in the Pike and Miami County regions of east-central Kentucky. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. Covington is one of two cities in Pike County (the other being Louisville), and it is also the county seat. The first gun sights were erected in 1802 by Captain James Wilkinson near what is now downtown Covington. The captain had been stationed there during the American Revolutionary War and he wanted to commemorate this fact by erecting a cannon tower that would include a cross-shaped target range on top. A few years later, Captain Wilkinson's son, Captain John Wilkinson, erected a second cannon tower nearby which still stands today. During World War II, local resident Benny Cunningham installed an 8x50mm machine gun on top of his home which became known as "The Benny Cunningham Gun" because it was used to shoot practice rounds at nearby military ranges during wartime. After the war ended, Benny donated the gun to the city of Covington for use as an open-air museum until 1976 when it was moved inside City Hall for storage due to its age and condition. In 1985, Mayor Larry Ellinghausen designated "The Benny Cunningham Gun" as one of Covington's historical landmarks. In 1992, following enactment of federal assault weapons ban legislation in Congress,[1] Mayor Ellinghausen ordered all guns within city limits be surrendered to authorities without any opportunity for sale or purchase; these firearms were stored inside City Hall until 1993 when they were sold off to buyers under state law.[2] This event marked the end of an era where handguns only could be possessed by citizens who met strict qualifications such as owning a valid concealed handgun permit or having passed a background check[3]. Since then, many changes have occurred within Covington with respect to itsGun culture including several mass shootings[4][5], most recently taking place on November 1st 2017 when 26 people were shot dead at an outdoor music festival in Parkland Florida[6]. It has come to be popularly believed that "The Parkland shooting"[7] was actually part of a wider pattern involving large gatherings across America that left people unarmed and vulnerable before ultimately resulting in fatalities thanks largely to gun issues and mental health issues[8]. However despite multiple investigations into this matter ongoing throughout 2018,[9][10] no indictments have yet been announced against anyone involved which leaves open questions about why some individuals are allowed access to firearms while others face restrictions simply because they reside within certain zip codes or communities?

In 1861, Confederate troops burned down the courthouse in Covington, which led to a general uprising against the Confederacy in that town. Union troops captured Cavington during the Battle of Perryville on October 25, 1862. On November 3rd, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Lexington County while under heavy Union fire from within and outside the courthouse walls. In 1870, local officials decided to rename every community north of Louisville an honorific name beginning with "M" due to concerns about social degradation brought on by overcrowding in eastern Kentucky towns such as Louisville and Lexington (which had received their new names). This program continued until 1907 when all honorific names were discontinued effective January 1st of that year because of budget cuts caused by World War I.
