In 1840, an opera HOUSE opened at the Opera House on Main Street that operated until 1951 when it closed due to low attendance rates. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Covington while campaigning for President of America and attended a Masonic meeting at which he became ill with measles and passed out on the steps of the old courthouse before being taken inside where he recovered quickly. He then went on to victory against Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election that year In 1868, a community hall was built near present day First National Bank south of Main Street by Jno Hennessey This building served as both a public library and branch office until it burned down in 1955 A new community hall was completed east of First National Bank just north of Court Avenue between 1960 and 1962 by Mrs Nancie Kapp It served as both a public library and branch office until it burned down also between 1960-62 The old post office building located west of Court Avenue between 1961-1965 burnt down also between 1961-1965
Covington was founded by the Kentucky Colonization Society in 1785. It became a small town after the American Civil War, when people from many states moved to the area to find new opportunities. The population of Covington peaked at over 10,000 in 1920, but has slowly declined since then.
