The town's namesake may be James Covington, a Revolutionary War general and planter who established a settlement there in 1781. The community began as an farming community on the banks of the Ohio River about three miles (4 km) upstream from present-day Covington. James Covington arrived in 1781 and founded what would become Covington on land he acquired from Irish settlers near present-day Dayananda Station on the Ohio River. In 1819, during the American Civil War, General Braxton Bragg's army passed through this area en route to battle at Perryville north of Louisville. On September 9, 1819—the day after General Bragg won his first battle against Union forces at Perryville—he ordered Maj.-Gen.(GEN.) Elijah Peebles to build Fort shot Tower along the river's east bank to guard against Confederate attacks upriver while he marched his army overland to join forces with General Ulysses S. Grant at battles near Petersburg and Fredericksburg Campaigns two weeks later. In 1861, when Kentucky seceded from the United States, Covington voted to remain Unorganized Territory and became part of Marshall County government under Governor John Giddens He also served as ministerial correspondent with Congress during that year's First Mexican–American War In 1865/66, when Confederate troops burnedbuildings throughout Marshall County as they retreated from Bowling Green after Battle of Perryville – one such building was located just south of present-day Bolton Street – resulting in loss of life among both Confederates and Unionists within minutes – Mr. Giddens authorized reclamation by citizens for military purposes only; thereafter known as "Fort Stephenson" or "Garrison Point", until it was destroyed by fire in 1868 The reconstructed fortifications were completed by 1870 At that time it became known as "Covington Redoubt" or simply "Redoubt". For many years following its reconstruction it functioned as a military post providing defense against hostile Indians living east of the river between Harrisonburg Road (now US 62) and Lookout Mountain Railroad junction northeast of town . After Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 all private property within six miles (10 km) surrounding Fort Stephenson reverted back to state control including parts adjacent to modern day Bolton Street until finally being surrendered by Unionist forces ceding all but about seven acres (2400 m²) westward beyond modern day Buchanan Drive . From 1865 until 1898 guerrilla warfare occurred around Observatory Hill where large numbers of Native Americans had taken refuge following failed raids into nearby counties By 1898 most Native Americans had relocated away from eastern Kentucky due mainlyto white advances into their territory resulting in abolitionist efforts Thereafter centered around Lexington KY Today much attention focuses upon bourbon production which has resulted in Burnt Hickory Distillery being founded here by David Murray in 1987 creating what has been called America’s first continuous distillery belt program This affiliation produced some 100 million barrels worth of Bourbon Whiskey last year alone making it one half our total output

Covington is a town in and the county seat of Covington County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cumberland River. The town was founded by Colonel John Covington in 1789. In 1801, it became part of the new State of Kentucky when it was admitted to statehood. In 1827, it became a city and in 1840 it became the county seat of Covington County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army camped near Covington while he was besieging Lexington. Some Union soldiers who were quartered in nearby Bardstown reported seeing Confederate troopers coming and going from their encampment, which may have angered Confederate generals Jeff Davis and Philip Sheridan enough to encourage them to attack Bardstown instead ofLexington – an action that ultimately led to Lee's victory at Bull Run. On November 15th 1888 there was a tornado outbreak over much of central Kentucky including parts of Covington and Lexington - one person died as a result (the only death within twentyfour hours due to weather). The strongest tornado ever measured in this area killed two people within one block of each other on September 22nd 1889 - one blocks east of where Covington now stands
Covington was founded in 1792 by John Covington and his wife, Martha. The town became a small community of around 100 people with a single store and two homes. By the early 1800s, the population had grown to over 200 people and the town began to develop into a transportation hub for the area. In 1819, Covington became the county seat of Jefferson County. Over time, Covington grew into an important city with its own government and economy. In 1924, Covington was renamed Kentucky's capital city after Commonwealth of Kentucky Governor James Maysville proposed the change. The name stuck and has served as the metropolis of Kentucky ever since.
