Covington, Kentucky is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 6,820 at the 2010 census. Covington is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Covington was Nicholas Carpentier, who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1786. He founded a log cabin on the river bank near present-day downtown Covington and named it "Carpentier's Mill". In 1806, John Ladd purchased the mill from Nicholas Carpentier and began to operate it as a gristmill. By 1812, there were six mills in Hardin County; three of these were owned by citizens of Covington. Ladd sold his interest in the mills to James Hogg in 1815. Hogg operated them as a flour mill until 1862 when he bought out James' partners and became sole proprietor of the company. The company continued to be run as an individual enterprise until 1870 when it was merged with another flour mill business, PemberTON MILLS & CO., Inc., into one large organization known as THE FLOUR MACHINERY COMPANY OF KENTUCKY (TFP). At this point TFP changed its name to THE KYNOCK FLOUR MILLS COMPANY Ltd., which it remains today. In 1881 TFP merged with two other flour companies to form THE FARMERS GRISTMILL COMPANY LIMITED Partnership which still operates today as The Flour Mills Company Limited Partnership (FMC). In 1925 FMC merged with two other flour companies to form JONES BREAD CORPORATION LIMITED PARTNERSHIP which still operates today as Jones Bread Corporation Limited Partnership (JBCL). This history shows that through hard work and dedication over many years by many people Covington has been able to keep its identity alive even while major changes have occurred within its community and industry
Covington was founded in 1802 by James Covington and his father, John Covington. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Cumberland River, which made it a popular destination for merchants and farmers. In 1824, the town passed through a series of changes that helped it become more industrialized. The first factory in Covington was built by David Witherspoon and operated until 1831. A second factory was built by Isaac Perkins in 1836 and continued to be operation until 1860. In 1851, the city became the county seat of Hardin County.
