Covington is a town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1890, white settlers began moving into what would become Marshall County and founded the towns of Beech Grove and Paintsville. In 1893, Covington became the county seat and remained so until 1904 when Hopkinsville was chosen as the new county seat because it had a larger market for goods and services. The original courthouse which still stands today served as the local court house from 1892 to 1904 before being replaced by a more modern building that still stands today. The current courthouse was built in 1978 following a request from then-Mayor Tom Ramsey to replace an original courthouse that had been destroyed by fire years earlier. Covington, Kentucky, is a town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,514 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The first permanent Europeans to visit Covington were French traders and travelers in 1775 who named it "Verdun." However, the town's present name is derived from Nicholas Covington (1711-1798), an investor and planter in North Carolina who came to America in 1767 and settled near what is now downtown Covington. He bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of the river for £5 per acre ($10/ha). In 1778 he built a large frame courthouse and jail on his property. The first schools in Covington were taught by ministers from nearby Georgetown. A post office was established at Covington on December 15, 1807; it was discontinued due to lack of mail service in that area. In 1814 General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Kentucky during the American Civil War and burned down most of Lexington before being driven back by Confederate forces across the Great Smoky Mountains into Tennessee. Many people including many prominent landowners fled to Virginia or West Virginia because they were fearful of Sherman's invading army which had not yet arrived in Louisvilleshire nor did they have any reason to fear further raids by Union soldiers as they patrolled only five miles (8 km) outside their boundaries. Nicholas Covington returned home after this campaign but lost much stock he had brought over with him when he left Kentucky and died without heirs about two years later at age 80 years old having made several successful investments throughout his life including buying more than one million acres (4 square kilometers) of land all over America . The community around downtown has experienced some dramatic changes since its founding: In 1951 when Interstate 65 crossed through downtown from Lebanon Road southward there was barely enough room for a single car dealership; today it contains eight major dealerships as well as numerous smaller businesses clustered around four central areas: The heartland shopping district around Main Street between Third Avenue Southerly and Fourth Avenue South; glass-enclosed trucking hub along I-65 north/south exit lanes just west of Broadway; new industrial districts southwest of I-65 off US 421 near Fountain Hills; and latest development off US 421 east into rural Butler County - known locally as "The Strip". Although other parts of town continue to grow rapidly – such as Riverside Drive – Downtown remains quite small compared with other parts of Johnson County overnight growth can sometimes be impressive especially if you are within walking distance either from Main Street or I-65 Exit 4A where all sorts of restaurants offer sidewalk seating outdoors while inside there are often large open air cafes/bars that provide great views also located right next door to State University OfKentucky’s veterinary hospital which provides excellent medical services for local pets
The area that is now Covington was first settled by the Shawnee in the early 18th century. In 1792, James Robertson, a Scottish settler and politician, founded what is now the city of Lexington. The city was named for General John Forbes, who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, Robert E. Lee and his Confederate forces fought a battle at Cold Harbor near Covington, leading to the Battle of Gettysburg.
