Covington is a small town inwealthy in Kentucky. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Covington is located in Jefferson County and is about 20 miles west of Louisville. It was founded by Welsh colonists in 1790. The early history of Covington is unknown but it likely that it was founded as a small hamlet on the banks of the River Danube near what is now Louisville. In 1806, when Kentucky became an independent state, Covington became its capital and served as the seat of government for much of eastern Jefferson County. During the American Civil War, most residents sided with the Confederacy and many businesses were destroyed or looted by Union troops during the war. However, some people who lived in Covington chose to remain neutral and continue to function within their community despite this difficult time. After the war ended, many residents returned home and new businesses were established here such as a flour mill and a grocery store soon after ratification of the 14th Amendment granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color. In 1950, when then-Senator Robert Byrd initiated legislation creating Kentucky's first school district outside Lexington (this would later become Kenton County), he recommended that Covington be included within that new district because its large population would make it an ideal place to house schools serving rural areas beyond Lexington's jurisdiction. This recommendation resulted in approval from then-Governor Bevin and made Covington one ofKentucky's largest towns by 1990s standards when Census data showed its population had increased from 8,500 to 10,000 residents over that decade alone!
