Covington was founded in 1781 by Captain John Covington and his wife, Anne. The town became a county seat in 1836, and it was incorporated as a city in 1907. The population of Covington reached 151,853 in the 2010 census. Covington is located in eastern Kentucky on the Cumberland River. It is bordered by Louisville to the north, Lexington to the east, Morgantown to the south, and filtertowns such as Beech Grove and Whitesburg to the west. The area that would become Covington was first settled by Native Americans including the Cherokees and Catawba. In 1781, Captain John Covington purchased land comprising what is now northeast corner of present-day Ky., near where he had been born about two years earlier on November 7th of that year. He named this tract "Covington" after himself and his father-in-law James Robertson (1724 – 1800), who had organized a Conestoga trading post at what is now east side of Market street between Third Street and Fourth Street; from which point traders operated until Cherokee Nation Removal Act Of 1830 terminated their activities outside Indian Territory). Captain John's purchase included Dragoon Creek which later became part of White Oak creek valley which served as home to various plantations owned by planters along its course beginning with Colonel Robert Ewing's Elmwood Plantation & Company’s estate planted thereon (now downtown Louisville) – thence downstream through lots belonging to Captains Jno Morton (1689 - 1759), David Wilkinson etc., & others finally arriving at our present site within three miles thereof being situated about one mile above sea level on high ground watered by several creeks flowing into White Oak CreekValley from several directions viz: Fairfield Preserve adjoining Fayetteville Pike also lying within our limits having been surveyed for Benjamin Harrisonyer in Lord Botetourt’s Commissionercy aforesaid [the latter title acquired ceded from him ceded lands adjacent Carrickfergus County] under direction of General Assembly when passed but never executed I certify tht following description will do for buildings & other purposes appertaining thereto viz: One long story + two stories deep gabled roofed weatherboard or clapboard frame building with 2 wide doorways flanking each side well back from public square having an overhanging eaves every window except 3/4ths height largest single window having sidelight opening only 3/4ths inch high surmounted by small headlight light just inside edge og projecting over gable end common door 5 feet wide x 6 feet high openable x 8 feet wide seeingsize windows 4 1/2 feet high large single pane out front no glass Letitia Smith occupied one room wicketless double shutter door 12 inches tall A surveyor appointed pursuant to an act of December 29th Anno Middanee did make out a plat thereof containing all Lots sold herein unto Captaine John Cunningham [(dated October 26th Apt 1805)]…Three sides were opened up for cultivation but very few people resided therein until after peace came because so much valuable land lay waste during those early days when war seemed imminent etc.: Real Property Surveyor's Office Abstract Book V1 p262 This document contains interesting information about early settlers in this area including Captain John Cunningham and why he named his property "CovINGTON."
The community of Covington was founded in 1824 by Quakers. It became a key transportation and trade center for the region, and also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town was destroyed by fire in 1868, but was rebuilt and renamed Covington after President James K. Polk in 1881.
