During the American Civil War, Covington played an important role in both sides of the conflict. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at nearby Fort Donelson. The attack resulted in heavy casualties for both sides and caused significant damage to infrastructure in central Kentucky. As a result of this attack, Covington became one of the most heavily damaged cities in Kentucky during the war. After the war ended, many people returned to Covington and began rebuilding their lives. Today, Covington is an important community that continues to thrive thanks to its strong economy and well-developed infrastructure
In 1802, the town of Covington was founded by Captain Daniel Boone. The initial settlers were men from Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1830, the town had a population of 350 people. In 1834, the United States Congress passed a bill to create the Cumberland Gap National Monument in order to protect the area from development. The monument was created and administered by the United States Department of Agriculture until 1959.
