In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army from Bardstown to nearby Maysville to oppose Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. Aftermath of the Civil War led to an increase in demand for labor in Maysville as well as increased development around Covington. By 1870, there were over 10,000 people living in Covington and it had become one of the most important towns within Kentucky’s borders.
