Campbellsville, Kentucky is a small town in the southern Appalachians located about an hour and a half drive from downtown Louisville. The population was 3,569 as of the 2010 census. It is named for General John Campbell who fought in the American Revolution. The first settler in what is now Campbellsville was James McGill who arrived in 1778. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the route of the Allegheny Mountains Railway. By 1820, it had a store, school, and two churches. In 1822, General Andrew Jackson made Campbellsville his headquarters during his campaign against Native Americans at Whittier Hill near today's Lebanon High School. In 1827, David Hammond built a log cabin on what is now known as Hammond Lane which became home to some of Campbellsville's earliest residents. Over time, most of the original settlers moved away or died from natural causes; however, a few families kept their homes until around 1900 when they sold them off to new owners. During World War II, much of Campbevilie was destroyed by bombing raids by the United States Air Force (USAAF). However, many buildings still survive including: The old high school which still stands; Hammond Cabin which was used as barracks during World War II; and several small businesses such as A&P grocery store and post office which were all rebuilt after the war. Today Campbellsville is home to several thousand people who are mostly farmers and ranchers with some jobs in nearby metropolitan Louisville but also some people living close to nature enjoying forest walks or fishing trips outside town limits

By 1825, Campbellsville had become one of the largest settlements in eastern Kentucky. during the American Civil War (1861-1865),Campbellsville played an important role in providing supplies for Union troops camped along the Cumberland River. In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewing ordered his Confederate army to cross the river into Kentucky at Glasgow Gap near present day Campbellsville. However, before he could do so, Union forces destroyed his bridge over the Cumberland River. As a result of this event, many Confederate soldiers abandoned their ships anchored along the river and crossed into eastern Kentucky instead. From 1862 until 1865, CampbellsVILLE experienced heavy fighting which resulted in many casualties on both sides. In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln surrendered Fort Donelson to General Ulysses S Grant after a three-day battle that ended with more than 1,,000 deaths on both sides including 127 Americans killed and 513 wounded at Fort Donelson National Monument (). Aftermath of war caused great damage to townscape which still exists today as scars left by artillery fire and battles are observable throughout downtown areas such as Market Square or Bank Street
