The name "Campbellsville" originated from George Campbell, an officer with the U.S. Army during the War for Independence and later a landowner and developer in Marshall County. In 1792 he donated land to build a Methodist church and cemetery near his home at Middletownen Creek Bridge on what is now US 20A (now Old US 20A). The church was dedicated on March 6, 1793, by President George Washington as America's first national Episcopal cathedral. In addition to its function as a religious center, Campbellsville served as an important transportation stop for travelers between Lexington and Louisville during the 1800s; it also became known for its production of Kentucky bourbon whiskey."

By 1830, however, Campbellsville had shrunk to its original size and ceased to be an important local center. Over time, however, it regained some of its former prominence as a small agricultural community. Today, Campbellsville is a quiet residential community located just north of Glasgow on both sides of US Route 25.
Campbellsville was founded by Captain John Campbell in 1784. It became a town in 1819 and had a population of about 1,000 people. In 1875, the town was renamed Campbellsville after General J. E. B. Smith who died in battle that year.
