In recent years, growth has been steady across all demographics thanks to job opportunities and population growth in surrounding towns such as Fayette and Lexington which have all grown larger since Campbellsville's heyday as an agricultural community back when most residents worked within walking distance or drove into town for shopping purposes only. The first permanent settler in Campbellsville was Levi Sumner who arrived in 1785. His land lay between what are now US 59 and US 422 and he named his tract "Sumners' Hill." In 1814, John Covington sold him 1/3 of an acre for $2 to Nicholas Barker. By 1840, over 100 people had lived in Campbellsville and it boasted a school and 3 stores. A post office was established at Campbellsville on July 25, 1851, with James Henson as the first postmaster. In 1860, Elijah Hicks took up residence near the present day intersection of US 421 and KY 116. He raised corn and hay on his farm until 1865 when he built a sawmill on the river below present day store building #1 (now used as a restaurant). In 1870–71 JB Hammond bought some land just east of downtown from Elijah Hicks and platted it into lots which were marketed to settlers throughout Kentucky by WL Earle & Brothers merchants. Many early residents of Campbellsville were farmers or mechanics who worked for Earle's companies such as Daniel Haskell and George Stephensonbaugh Sr.. Many families continued to live in Campbellsville during the years following World War II because they could not find enough employment opportunity outside their home communities after the war ended; many veterans returned home after serving in Europe or Asia. For many years there was also an annual Christmas market held at Battle Ground Park every December since childhood friends would gather together around a large fire pit to sell goods from their homes.) A new courthouse was erected on Main Street opposite current store building #2 (now used as apartments). The court heard cases until 1971 when it moved to its current location behind Courthouse Annex #2 which opened that year. On January 1st 1911 local teacher Mrs Price donated her unused classroom inside Courthouse Annex #2 for use as homeschooling classrooms for her students during high school termtime; today this room remains one of only two remaining rooms within Courthouse Annex #2 still active as homeschooling classrooms! During World War II most residents avoided military service because they knew that opportunities available back home would be much better than those found working in munitions plants or factories; however some did serve - among them Tom Doherty who served with distinction during World War I before returning home to work his family's farm while also attending college at Western University where he earned his Bachelors degree in Agricultural Science! On November 10th 1951 local farmer Vernon Weems offered cash for any horse or cow left behind by soldiers retreating from Korea through Camp Overbrook north of town; this offer led to the establishment of nearby Kurland Horse Farm which remains operational today! After numerous flooding events occurred during the late 1960’s & 1970’s including severe storms caused by heavy rains that affected parts of eastern Kentucky & western Tennessee myriad businesses closed their doors including several banks which resulted in numerous historic buildings within town becoming vacant prompting community members to come up with plans to restore these properties over time – resulting ultimately into Today's Historic DowntownCampbellsburg!"
