After years of growth and prosperity, JB Ewing company went bankrupt in 1907 and its assets were sold to another company which continued to produce rubber until it too collapsed in 1929. In that same year, local entrepreneur C W Goodrich established the first modern grocery store in Kentucky when he opened his store at 404 Main Street. Goodrich would continue to operate his store until he passed away during World War II. Today, Campbellsville is an agricultural town with a principal industry being cattle farming; however, there are also a number of small businesses based around various other activities such as manufacturing or services providing goods or services to residents within the town limits including transportation, accommodation and food service providers as well as professional services such as accounting and law firm representation (the Kelleys have been practicing law here since 1892). There are also several restaurants/cafés open to the public which serve up traditional American cuisine complete with proceeds going back into local causes such as fundraising for charities like Stonington Area Junior High School’s autism program or working towards building a new library adjacent to Main Street). Campbellsville was founded in 1824 by James Campbell and his family. The first store in Campbellsville was built on the south side of the river near present-day Main Street. By 1830, there were six stores and twenty-four households in the community. Growth continued during the 1830s as well with mills being erected along the river and new land being developed nearby. In 1835, James Campbell donated land to form what would become downtown Campbellsville. The first courthouse in town was also built that year. During much of its early years, Campbellsville functioned as a transportation hub for surrounding counties. A ferry service connected downtown with neighboring Whitley County until it ceased operations in 1907 due to heavy use by locals and tourists alike. In 1857, John Sevier became president of Sevier Coal Company and began investing heavily in new mines throughout central Kentucky which would lead to increased production around Camp Bellsville including coal fields on both sides of the river that remain today known as Sevier Hills (now McCloy Hill). This increased production allowed for more settlers to move into Camp Bellsville from other parts of Kentucky over time leading to an increase population from 539 residents at the 2000 census up to 1,965 residents at the 2010 census.
Campbellsville was founded in 1784 by David Campbell and his wife Margaret. The first settlers in the area were farmers, but the town began to grow quickly when a railroad came through the region in the late 1800s. Today, Campbellsville is a thriving community with several thousand residents. It has two hospitals, three schools, and a variety of businesses and services.
