Other early settlers were John and Nancy McGee, who also founded what would become Lebanon (now Lebanon Station) on the Cumberland River. In 1822, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Campbellsville while campaigning against Native American forces in what is now West Virginia; many of the local citizens were taken prisoner and forced to work on Jackson's army as cooks and messengers. After his victory over Indian resistance at New Orleans in 1824, General Jackson ordered all native troops must disband or be turned over to their respective tribes. As a result of this order, many Campbellsville men became skilled craftsmen or started their own businesses. A Presbyterian church was built by Rev. Elihu Biddle in 1825 and served as the center for religious services for most of the town's early years; it burned down in 1861 but was rebuilt and enlarged several times before being destroyed by fire again in 1929.
