In 1827 Captain George Stephenson invented an air gun that could be fired using compressed air instead of cannon powder which gave rise to pistols such as this one which fires balls filled with lead or other munitions through small holes punched in their back surface

Campbellsville was founded by James Campbell in 1811 as a trading post on the Ohio River. The post grew to be a major center for commerce and education in Hardin County. In 1827, Campbell donated land to form what is now the University of Louisville. In the 1850s, Campbell's grandson, John A. Campbell Jr., helped create one of Kentucky's most important political families: the Campells. John A.'s sons William and Andrew were two of seven children born to James and his wife Nancy (née Patton). After studying at Transylvania Seminary in Lexington, KY., William married Mary Elizabeth King in 1855 and became an influential politician and banker in Kentucky. They had five children: James (1857-1937), Mary Elizabeth (1858-1945), Andrew (1860-1939), John Arthur (1862-1935), and Helen Margaret (1864-1946). John A.'s final years were spent working at his father's bank before he died suddenly at age 64 from pneumonia on October 26, 1933. He had been planning to retire for many years but never reached that goal due to health problems stemming from old age. His funeral took place three days later at First Presbyterian Church in Louisville with state Senator Ziegler presiding over the service followed by burial at Mount Zion Cemetery nearby.
