The first settlers to what is now Campbellsville were Andrew Campbell and his wife Margaret. They came from Scotland and landed on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in 1807. They built a log cabin on what is now Old National Pike (now US-19) near present day Campbellsville. In 1828, they moved to what is now eastern Kentucky and founded the town of Campbellsville on the site of their original cabin. The first post office was established here in 1828. Andrew Campbell died in 1835 but his widow continued to operate the business until her death in 1850. She bequeathed her property including the town site to her son-in-law, John Smith, Jr., who organized the first agricultural society here in 1857. The town grew rapidly during this time with many new businesses being erected such as a mill, storehouse, schoolhouse, etc.. The population reached its peak around 1860 with over 100 residents living within its boundaries! However, by 1870 it had declined sharply due to various factors including increasing competition from neighboring towns and counties; increased travel times between these locations; technological advances which made agriculture more efficient; and decreasing demand for farmland due to changing lifestyles among farmers! However, some vestiges of this original growth can still be seen today such as Old National Pike which has been designated as an International Highway! During World War I (1914-18), Campbelvilles services rendered helped contribute greatly to patriotic efforts throughout Kentucky both locally and nationally The city’s fire department responded quickly & effectively to numerous fires within its limits including those that destroyed most or all of nearby Louisville’s downtown business district In 1919 when General Motors Corporation located their corporate headquarters nearby – this provided yet another impetus for businesses & citizens alike to come together & improve infrastructure including creating two parkettes – one on each side of Main Street fronting onto adjoining fields On November 15th 1922 – following years long battle between local officials (& state lawmakers) over control of local water resources – voters formally approved unincorporated area annexation into adjacent Jefferson County resulting in “Campbell’s Mill Race Course” becoming part & parcel thereof

Campbellsville is a small town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,713 at the 2010 census. The name Campbellsville comes from Robert Campbell, who settled the area in 1792. The first post office in Campbellsville was established on November 12, 1828. It was renamed to its current name on May 7, 1902. In July 1861, Confederate General John C. Breckinridge set up a military camp in what is now Campbellsville and named it for his old friend and predecessor as Ulysses S. Grant's lieutenant general of the Confederacy William Hance Campbell (1813-1865). The town center of Campbellsville dates back to when the first store opened in 1826 on Main Street across from present day Trinity Lutheran Church (now First Baptist Church). The store had two rooms with a single fireplaces and served local farmers and travelers alike until 1857 when James Witherspoon started a larger grocery store on Second street which soon became known as “the grand old man” of the town because he has been serving customers since that time. In 1870 most of the buildings around First Baptist Church were destroyed by an arsonist but all of the windows remain today inside those structures as part of museum display about early pioneer life and history in this community. In addition to their churches there are several frame homes dating back to before 1800 still standing throughouttown including one near Third Street which has been preserved as an historical landmark since 1954! In 1850 physical education classes were offered for students in both public schools and private academies located just east of downtown where coal mine superintendent Mr White taught until 1865 when he closed shop due to health concerns; however religious instruction continued during his absence into the 1860’s at First Baptist Schoolhouse located west side across from present day Subway restaurant! . . . This building continued operation until 1929 under new ownership becoming home schooled through 1963 after which it reverted back to government use until 1974 when it reopened as part of newly formed Holy Cross Episcopal Academy serving grades K-12th grade!!! A second brick church replaced both schools starting services September 3rd 1870 with Rev J B Williamson officiating over parochial services led by Rev R L Smith followed by Sunday morning worship each week ending with dinner at home…..After being vacant almost 20 years they reopened October 6th 1980 under new ownership becoming St Peters Episcopal Chapel eventually sold again December 15th 1990 finally coming down within 4 years after much protests to be repurposed into apartments!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By 1870, Campbellsville had a population of 14,000 people and it was one of the fastest-growing towns in Kentucky. The city changed its name to Louisville in 1896 due to disapproval from some residents who felt that Louisville had taken too much credit for their town's growth.
