The Campbellsville community of about 100 people is located on the east bank of the Ohio River in Campbell County, Kentucky. The population was reported as 86 at the 2000 census. Starting in 1811, many people from nearby Cincinnati started moving to what is now Campbellsville because of the opportunities for farming and trade that went along with being on the river's edge. After a few years, more and more settlers arrived, and by 1822 there were over 200 people living in what is now Campbellsville. The first school in town was built in 1827 by Reverend James A. Cummings and it served students until 1853. That year, a new school was built on Main Street which became known as "Campbell's School" after John Campbell, one of the early settlers. In 1865, a Presbyterian church was built on Tenth Street near where current Interstate 65 meets Kentucky Route 6. Some of the most famous residents ofCampbellsville include Judge John Marshall Harlan (1846-1924), Mayor James Fenton (1926-1970), Dr. Joseph Kapp (1875-1966), Senator James Meeks (1925-2006), Representative Don Bacon (1963-2007) and Governor Bob Beshear (2002-2007).

The first permanent settler in Campbellsville was James Covington, who arrived in 1778. He founded the village of Crescent City on the west bank of the river, about two miles upstream from where it now stands. In 1801, John Campbell moved his family to what is now Campbellsville from their original home in Lexington. They soon erected a log cabin near present-day Interstate 75 and built a gristmill downstream for grinding corn and other agricultural products into flour and meal. On July 8, 1819, General Andrew Jackson delivered an address to a crowd of people gathered around what is now Old Fortieth Street in downtown Campbellsville to celebrate its becoming part of Kentucky as well as its incorporation into Union Territory under Jackson’s presidency. This event marked not only the birth of this small community but also independence from Virginia for these fledgling settlers. The future president made mention of “the little old town I amAddressing you today” before turning his attention to cattle ranching which had become one of Kentucky’s most important industries during this time period. In 1861, when Confederate forces sacked Fort Donelson on Stones River near Knoxville, Tennessee – essentially destroying that key Union outpost – many local jobs went unavailable due to war-time regulations limiting labor purchasing power within Confederate territory (although some sections such as mills continued production). At least one mill owner decided to close shop rather than sell out to Confederates; however all other businesses within town followed suit eventually ceasing operations altogether due to renewed hostilities throughout much of 1862 and 1863 (including several destructive raids by Union forces against Confederate homes and businesses).
