The town was originally named Douglass after James Douglass, an American Revolutionary War general and delegate from Virginia.Douglass was born in 1759 in what is now Campbellsville and died there in 1822. His son John Douglass, Jr., who later became an important lawyer and politician, moved his family to the area around present-day Campbellsville when he was young. In 1825, Andrew Mellon, then Secretary of Commerce under President James K. Polk, purchased some land at what is now the intersection of State Route 602 and State Route 411 near present-day Campbellsville from Daniel Boone for $2,000 dollars. This purchase made McGowan County one of Mellon's earliest holdings in western Kentucky. soon afterwards McGowan County developed into one of America's leading coalmining areas with many small towns surrounding mines including Campbellsville which became known as "the Hub".
