Campbellsville is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky and part of the Campbell County, Kentucky Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. The first resident of Campbellsville was James Ketchum, who arrived there in 1822. Bickford established a trading post here in 1827; Ebenezer Brown purchased land from James Ketchum and erected a dam across Big Sandy Creek so that he could irrigate his farm; and Andrew White settled around 1830 on some land he had acquired east of present-day downtown Campbellsville. During its earliest years, Campbellsville was primarily agricultural with modest brick buildings being built for local officials and farmers during this time period. However, over time it became more significant as an industrial center due to its location within easy reach of major transportation hubs including Paducah (30 miles), Louisville (25 miles), Glasgow (10 miles), Bardstown (10 miles), Morehead City (8 miles) and Lexington (7½ miles). In addition to its importance as an economic node,Campbellsville also served as home to numerous important dignitaries throughout its history including governors George Rogers Clark and Josiah Thomas; mayors John Fenton & John Belknap; justices David Garland & Thos. But since then various initiatives have been undertaken by both government and private sectors aimed at reversing this trend Accordingly, much has changed since 2000 when Cambell County's only daughter city—Frankfort—was born into a growing Rural Development Program intended to revive those parts of Appalachia most affected by loss of population density (). In recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest inCampbellsville history; particulary because of its connections to Kentucky's Civil Rights Movement era. In 2008, local historian John Dyer authored an article about "Campbellsburg: A History Reborn" which attracted national attention. Since then, many projects have been launched aimed at preserving or furthering knowledge about this important part of Kentucky's history
