Campbellsville is a small town in Kentucky, located just south of the city of Frankfort. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area and lies within the eastern portion of that region. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1819 as Campbellsville Court House. It name change to Campbellsville in 1824 after General James Campbell, who died during the Mexican–American War. In 1829, a post office was established there and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler to arrive in what is now Campbellsville was John Marshall who arrived around 1819. He built a cabin on land he acquired from Colonel John Sevier near present day Hawkins Road and Delaware Avenue. Marshall's cabin became known as "Marshall's Station" because it served as one point of entry for early settlers into this area. In 1824, General James Campbell moved his brigade headquarters from Lebanon to what is now Campbellsville when he took command of United States forces engaged against Mexico at Buena Vista Rancho de las Aguas Calientes outside Frankfort. Upon his death at that rancho on October 16, 1846, Confederate General Robert Ewell took control of the situation and ordered all Union forces out of Buena Vista without awaiting orders from higher up about their next move. As a result, most people living within earshot (and probably also inside)of Buena Vista whereGeneralEwell burned alive are direct descendants or even immediate family members thereof today; including many local politicians and business owners whose ancestors were part or all participants therein during those pivotal days...Today much evidence remains documenting howGeneralEwell perished at Buena Vista which includes reconstructed portions of his burning campsite adjacent tothe old hotel building now used for apartments overlooking Interstate 65 acrossfromthe buena vista airport...It should be noted that not only did GeneralEwell perishduringthis action but also two other high-ranking Confederate officers accompanying him--Captain Edwin Poe and Lieutenant Samuel Thomas--both died too).
