Campbellsville is a small town in Allegany County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Allegany County. The first permanent settler in Campbellsville was James Bowie in 1792. By 1830, Campbellsville had a population of about 200 people. A post office was established at Campbellsville in 1836, and by 1840 it had reached its present size of 16 residents. In 1854, the first school building in Campbellsville was built; it served as a public school until 1928. In 1868, John Witherspoon became the first person to win an election as mayor of Campbellsville; he won with over 60% of the vote. In 1902, commissioners erected a new courthouse on Main Street; it served as the county courthouse until 1957 when it was replaced by the current structure on First Avenue. A fire destroyed most of downtown Campbellsville on December 24th, 1865; no one was killed or injured as a result. The community rebuilt quickly and resumed operations within six weeks without damage to any property whatsoever. A local paper reported that "the Union Parish Committee are organizing subscriptions for $10 each for damages done to our old brick buildings during last night's terrible fire". In 1927-28 there were two floods which destroyed many homes and businesses in town including: schools (one flood caused loss of all but one classroom), banks and three churches (church being assessable damage). People banded together to help rebuild but some lost everything also including their home valued at around $8000 dollars after only 3 years since the flood! Only 10 families out of more than 1300 people who lost their homes returned back to live again once these repairs were made which shows just how resilient this community can be!

The Campbellsville area was settled by families of Scotch-Irish descent in the early 1800s. The first permanent home was built on a tract of land that is now the town of Campbellsville. The family name originated in County Fermanagh, Ireland. They were known as the Campbells of Kiltueen. In 1814, John Campbell purchased 2,000 acres (0.8 km²) of land at what is now milepost 9 on the Bardstown Road from James Hogg and erected a log cabin named after himself. A post office was established at this location in 1816, and became known as Campbellsburg. In 1827, Alexander McKnight bought 1,500 acres (0.61 km²) of land adjoining John Campbell's holdings and laid out a village called McKnight's Crossing on the site of present-day Cameron Village. The first settler to arrive in this area was Alexander McKnight's son Hugh McKnight who arrived about 1830. By 1840, there were over 20 households living in these areas including Methodist Episcopal Church and School House which still stand today
