The first settler in Campbellsville was James C. Campbell and his family who arrived in 1827. In 1860, John Witherspoon moved to Campbellsville from Ironton, Ohio and started a tannery there which became one of the leading tanneries in America. The town was founded on December 8, 1868 by Chas. Fenton and others when they came across some land which had been claimed by General Robert E. Lee after he lost the battle of Gettysburg. The railroads reached Campbellsville soon after it was founded; the first train coming through on November 6, 1870 was carrying coal from Dayton to Clarksburg. The town saw its heyday during World War II as it became a major munitions production center for Kentucky's defense needs; over 1 million lbs (454 kilograms) of TNT were produced here between 1940 and 1945 alone! However since then things have slowly declined; most notably when construction began on what would eventually be known as Interstate 71; this highway has destroyed much of the old mill district within minutes of arriving in town! Despite this decline however, many people still call Campbellsville their home; especially given that there are few other places like it remaining in Johnson County today - even though its total population may only number around 3,000! One reason for this popularity may be its charming downtown square which boasts several beautiful buildings dating back to the 1800s including an antique store and post office which are open daily except Saturday from 9am-2pm (closed Sundays). During this time period, various industries such as manufacturing and agriculture thrived in the smalltown atmosphere; however, there was no significant residential development until after World War II when many new families moved into the town because of its proximity to military bases and other large industrial centers.
