Campbellsville, Kentucky is a small town in the mountainous region of central Kentucky. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in Breathitt County. The name Campbellsville comes from James Campbell who settled here in 1829. He built a cabin on the banks of the Ohio River and named it "Campbellsville". The post office was established here in 1834. A post office called "Preston" was established here in 1865, but it was discontinued operation by 1886. The present spelling of the town's name was first given to it by George Witherspoon when he surveyed this area for USMAP in 1876. The first store and hotel were built in Campbellsville by General David Dixon during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. They are now gone, but their foundation can still be seen near the south side of Main Street. It wasn't until after World War II that things really took off for Campbellsville as a commercial center due to its location at the junction of two major highways (the Bluegrass Parkway and I-75). In 1963, then-Mayor Harry Sargent bought what used to be an old munitions plant on Park Road and turned it into what is now one of downtown Campbellsville's most popular tourist attractions – The Armory Show Mall! This shopping complex included a large movie theater and several stores including Sears, Kmart, JCPenney and Macy's among others before being closed down in 2001 due to budget cuts within City Hall.. Mayor Sargent died suddenly just weeks before his inauguration which caused citywide chaos as no one could know what would happen next! His widow continued running things until she resigned five years later when term limits made her unable to serve any longer without running into conflict with City Hall again! Thus ended an era where one mayor led both parts of town while also managing many other aspects of day-to-day life within the community – something that has not happened since then! Downtown Campbellsville has experienced some growth over time; however, much like every other community throughout Appalachia - slowdowns or sudden increases can always occur during times of economic volatility or change!

In 1875, the United States Congress passed the so-called "Campbell's Ford Act," which gave land east of what is now I-65 to finance construction of a road connecting Louisville and Lexington. The area that is now Campbellsville was given to the town for development under this act. The first store in Campbellsville opened its doors on December 1, 1875.
