Campbellsville, Kentucky is a small town located in Letcher County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Andrew Campbell in 1824. He named it after his father-in-law, John Campbell (1775-1857), who had helped him purchase land on which he would build a mill and become one of the most influential men in Kentucky during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The area now known as Campbellsville was originally part of Fayette County. In 1827, Andrew's son John married Elizabeth Covington, daughter of Colonel James Covington (1767-1848). They moved to Letcher County and bought 3 acres (1 km2) south of present day Campbellsville from David Denny for $100 cash. John and Elizabeth built a log cabin and started a family which would grow to include 11 children: 7 boys and 4 girls. On December 17, 1830, Andrew passed away suddenly at the age of 74 years old while out hunting with his youngest son John in what is now called Topeka Township in Letcher County. His wifeElizabeth followed him soon afterwards but died soon after due to complications from childbirth.Andrew's death left his seven sonsageries without direction or leadership; this led to dissension within the family over who should take on such an important role when their father passed away. Ultimately two brothers—John W., born February 9th 1831;and Andrew J., born May 24th 1833—took up residence near Topeka Township while four others stayed behind at Campbellstown with their mother’s three daughters: Anna L., Mary A., Effie B., all born between 1828 and 1830 and still living there when this paper was written—all except Effie B., who died young at age 36 years old in 1901.— thus forming what we know today as “Campbell’s Colony”.— After much discussion among thesefive original families about succession issues they finally chose John W.'s older brother Andrew J.'S as their new leader.— After several more years of turmoil over governance matters however things calmed down somewhat until 1865 when another dispute arose about whether or not William Gentry should have been allowed entry into the group because he had migrated from Tennessee some time earlier.— In that year an elaborate battle took place between these five families over control of a small piece of property just east of present day Topeka Township known today as “Gentryowne” resulting in six deaths including that of William Gentry himself.— This violence eventually led to ultimate dissolutionofthe original Five Families movement which resulted essentially in each family taking back their properties within their own boundaries again.— Today only two descendants remainof those original eleven siblings: Sisters Anna L.(born 1943)and Effie B.(born 1907)— both living in Western Kentucky currently.– Although many people believe that “Campbellstown” derives its name from Captain James Campbell himself,— there is no evidence whatsoever confirming this claim—- Instead it likely comes from nearby Farmington where General James Hargrave camped upon his return home following his victory over Native American forces at Fallen Timbers on October 17th 1792 during what became known as "The Battle Of Donelson"

Campbellsville, Kentucky is a small town in Hamilton County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Ephraim Campbell in 1801 as a trading post on the Ohio River. In 1812, Campbell sold his interest in the post to Nicholas Whitmore and James Caldwell for $5,000. In 1818, Campbell's son John Fenton bought the post from Whitmore and Caldwell. For many years, it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1861, after Confederate General Robert Ewell's Army invaded Kentucky and captured Louisville, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General William Taney to take control of Louisville and its surrounding area for military purposes. Taney refused because he thought that Campbell would be able to help provide support to Rebel forces within centralKentucky. General Lew Wallace took over control of Louisville from Taney and made it an important key strategic point for Confederate forces during the Battle of Perryville. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant advanced into centralKentucky and began besieging Johnson City (now Paducah), which was held by Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith. When Union forces reached Johnson City on July 1st they discovered that Johnston had withdrawn all his troops to Camp Moore outside Lexington because he anticipated that Grant would come through Central Kentucky before long; accordingly Johnston withdrew his force without battle on July 2nd just two days after Johnston had offered his surrender to Grant at Fort Donelson (now Nashville). This action left Lexington with only about 10% of its prewar population – almost all were taken captive or killed during the siege; this event is generally referred to as "the Raid". Campbellsville experienced some physical damage during these events: nearly every house in town was destroyed or heavily damaged by Union artillery fire; several streets were renamed for soldiers who died in action or surrendered during the Siege; one side of Main Street still stands today largely unaltered from this time period although much ruined since then; however most buildings have been replaced or rebuilt over time including both schoolhouses (founded in 1792) and a courthouse which first opened in 1907 but burned down in 1938 due to lack of funding..
