In 1822, Colonel John Campbell donated land for a road known as "Campbell's Trace." The first store in Campbellsville opened its doors in 1830. By 1840, there were 10 businesses operating in this community. During this time period, Campbellsville became an important transportation center due to its position on State Route 24 Alternate (now Kentucky State Route 191). This road allowed goods and passengers to be delivered quickly and easily between Louisville and nearby mines and plantations. In 1857-1858, Major General Oliver Hazard Perry fought a battle against Native Americans at Campbellsvilleammon Hill near present day downtown Louisville. This event is commemorated by a marker that stands just outside of town limits on Old French Road (). A post office was established at Campoldesville in 1861, but it closed operations within two years because of low mail rates caused by competition from other towns in Jefferson County. A new post office was established at Campoldesville proper in 1865; it remained open until 1961 when it was moved to Bardstown due to population growth within that county. The population of Campoldesville peaked at 12,000 during World War II; however following hostilities ceased all growth stopped except for modest births rates which resumed shortly afterward In 1949-1951 census figures show only 2 residents living inside urban limits while 8 residents lived outside those boundaries; today only 1 resident lives inside urban limits while 3 residents live outside those boundaries (.9% increase since 1950) . Also during this time period many businesses closed or changed hands due largely to economic conditions including technological innovations such as television production facilities set up along US 61 just east off I-64 . Since then much smaller scale changes have occurred such as more recent annexations into adjacent counties (Lauderdale & Henderson) or less dramatic changes like increased annexation rates resulting from city moves closer insufficiently distant for commercial service (e.g., Owensboro ). Despite these fluctuations over time though large percentages remain within urban areas
