Bowling Green, Kentucky is home to the world's first optometry school in 1796 and has been a center of optical technology since the late 1800s. The city experienced a resurgence in optical technology this century as businesses and individuals became interested in improving their vision. This interest has led to creation of new businesses and industry growth, including three major Optical Technology companies that have locate in Bowling Green over the last ten years: Philips, Littleray Opticals, and Raytheon. In 1796, when Bowling Green was founded as an optometry school, it was one of the only places in the United States where students could learn how to use lenses to improve their vision. Today, there are more than 1,500 optometric schools around the world that offer courses in optical science and technology. Bowling Green, Kentucky is a small town located in the central part of the state. It is bordered by Louisville to the south, Raqqa to the east, and Frankfort to the north. The population was 31,713 as of 2010. Bowling Green is named after Dr. George Washington Bowling, who lived in nearby Georgetown before moving to Kentucky in 1792. The town was founded on December 12, 1827 by John Minton and others from Ballinger County. In 1881 it became an incorporated city with a population of 70 inhabitants. On January 1, 1907 it merged with surrounding townships to form what is now called Bowling Green Township. The population had been declining until 2000 when it reached 382 persons. In 2002-2003 Bowling Green hosted the Stonington Speedway Grand Prix which attracted over $1 million in revenue for the community alone

Bowling Green, Kentucky is a city in the U.S. state of Kentucky and the county seat of Grayson County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census, down from 479 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County,KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bowling Green was founded by Methodists in 1792 as a settlement on the current site of downtown Bowling Green. The first Municipal Court was held here on October 10, 1792. Judge John Hennepin presided over what would become one of America's earliest municipal courts. The court met monthly until 1812 when it became bi-weekly because there were only six members in town at that time! In 1814, Mayor James Kenton proposed that Bowling Green be made a town! There were three votes in favor with one against; but on March 25th, 1815, with unanimous consent from all who took part in voting, Bowling Green became a Town! In 1827 KY Constitution - Article IX granted to each Town two Council Members which lasted until 1829 when this power was transferred to Mayor Charles Goodyear and City Manager James Witherspoon! On February 14th, 1830 an act went into effect providing for an election every four years for Mayor and City Councilmembers which we still maintain today; however due to our current form of government this has not always been possible !!!!!! In 1840 Frankfort amalgamated with Glasgow so BowlingGreen lost its independence !!! From 1840-1860 it lay fallow while its citizens rallied around their new Borough President John Sweeny !!! Finally on December 12th 1860 Bowman Greens new Borough President James Lickman activated bond issues worth $1 million dollars bonding all property within 2 miles of town limits creating Bowmansville!!!!!!!!! When finally incorporation occurred on January 15th 1861 it comprised 952 acres (3 square miles) including everything within 2 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On November 5th 1865 during Reconstruction BG voted to secede from KY & join Confederate States Of America !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As you can see from these short snippetsBowlingGreen has had some pretty big changes throughout its history.......although most notably being incorporated into Grayson County in 1861
