Bowling Green is a city in Kentuckiana, United States. The population was 24,834 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Breathitt County and one of the largest cities in Kentucky. The first inhabitants of what is now Bowling Green were the Algonquian-speaking Shawnee people. In 1778, General James Wilkinson of Virginiaaded Spanish colonists to establish a military base at what is now Bowling Green after his forces destroyed an Indian village near there. Colonel James Letcher purchased this land from Wilkinson for $1000 in 1802. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down part of the courthouse and jail in present-day Bowling Green after storming nearby Kingstontown with cannons and infantry. After the American Civil War ended, many Confederate soldiers who had been stationed in Kentucky returned home and continued to live there until 1865 when all but about 500 left for Arkansas as part of that state's Compromise Value which ended Reconstruction in South Carolina. These men founded several small businesses before leaving for good on April 12, 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Fort Donelson to take control of Tennessee over that state's southern border. The last Confederate soldier from Kentucky resigned his commission two days later at Fort Donelson under similar circumstances; he could not be prosecuted because he never fought on the battlefields within Union lines. Bowling Green became a town on December 10, 1870 when it was incorporated as a result of an act by the Legislature of Kentucky (1st Session). That year saw major development due to railroad construction through that area: lumber companies built factories and mills while grain elevator builders erected new warehouses downtown. In 1941, during World War II, Bowling Green served as a major airbase for fighter planes flying out of bases near Dayton, Ohio and Cincinnati, Ohio; both cities were bombed extensively by American troops during that conflict. Today much of what makes up Bowling Green’s history can be found buried within its downtown area which has been renovated several times over the years including most recently in 2006 after being hit by Hurricane Katrina.
