In 1819, John Covington built a dam across the river at present-day Bowling Green in order to irrigate his land nearpresent-day Cincinnati. The city of Cincinnati was incorporated as part of a larger region called Kentucky City on December 15, 1821. In 1827, Major General Thomas Jett founded Camp Nelson here after retreating from an engagement with Native Americans at Chillicothe Battlefield near present-day Wheeling, West Virginia. The camp served as a training ground for Ulysses S. Grant during his campaigns against Confederate forces in 1863 and 1865. On November 11th of that year, General Jett's body was brought back downstream from this location by boat to be interred at Mount Zion Cemetery in Cincinnati proper following his death during the battle days earlier that day while leading Union troops into battle against Confederate forces under Robert Eickhoff southeast of Dayton.. In 1861, Bowling Green became an important port when Confederate forces mined its harbor early one morning prior to their retreat upstreamward across the Ohio River towards Cairo Junction (now Cincinnati). This event helped start Ohio’s Civil War by providing fuel for operations ashore while also helping secure supplies for Confederate armies afloat off America’s coastlines.. In 1865, major general Ulysses S Grant arrived in town from Columbus via train and walked through downtown before being met by Mayor George Biddle who escorted him inside where he had dinner with Governor David Wirtz before departing for Overall's Station northeast of Dayton where he would lead Union troops into battle against Confederate forces under Jubal A Halleck northwest of Middletown later that day..
