The name "Bowling Green" may come from a Native American word meaning "place where there are many trees." In 1903, Bowling Green became an independent city after being rejected by its previous municipality, which functioned as its government until that time. In 1907, it hosted the first international world championship lawn bowling event known as the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). That same year saw the opening of Riverwalk Stadium which has been used by local teams ever since as their home field. In 1932, Interstate 75 was built through Campbell County and created much needed traffic relief for residents of neighboring counties during what were very difficult times for them economically. As a result of this development, more people began moving into Bowman Gray Township which borderes BowlingGreen on both sides and started to call it their new home; however, it would not be until after World War II that Bowman Gray would become truly annexed to BowlingGreen and all its citizens would share one common identity with those living within its boundaries regardless of race or ethnicity or any other differences that may have existed among different groups within Bowman Gray Township prior thereto. Today, BowlingGreen features a busy downtown area with several newspapers located there including The Courier-Journal and The Lexington Herald-Leader which have been publishing continuously since 1792 respectively making it one of the oldest continuously published papers in America while also boasting one of the most loyal followings among journalists across all genres across multiple mediums nationally; furthermore, it also boasts some high profile businesses including Google Campus headquarters just east of downtown along I-75 as well as numerous restaurants and nightlife options available nearby should visitors decide to venture out into town during their lunchtime or evening stroll around campus/downtown area; additionally annual events such as Mardi Gras parade dating back to 1834 continue throughout downtown each year complete with fantastic food Vendors along Broadway avenue where revelers gather each year prior to departure for party areas situated near river walk stadium
