Bowling Green, Kentucky is a town in Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hopkins County. Bowling Green is located on the Ohio River and has a total area of 26 square miles (72 km²). The first white person to set foot in what is now Bowling Green Township was James Robertson in 1792. At that time there were no settlements within the township boundaries and only hilly country to the east and west. In 1814 an act of Congress created Hopkinton Township from portions of western Hopkins County. Bowman's Ferry Road which crossed the river near present-day Bowling Green served as the eastern boundary ofHopkins County until it was moved westward by Act 2 of 1836. In 1845 Louisville and Cincinnati Railroad officials decided to build a line through Hopkins County from Louisville to Cincinnati instead of thru Dayton because Dayton would have been too far away for easy shipment of goods by railroads. The railroad reached Bowling Green on December 15th,1845 and began construction on what would become known as "The Big Line". The first store in Bowman's Ferry Road Village opened on January 3rd,1846 under subscription from local citizens who contributed $1 per week or more up until July 1st, 1847 when it became open to all with free admission for adults over 12 years old. This was also the first store in organized municipality in Kentucky since Lexington had been founded one hundred years earlier by colonists from England seeking refuge from religious persecution back home On May 20th 1870 trustees met at northeast corner of Third Street and Main Avenue (now First Street) in downtown Bowman’s Ferry Road Village and elected David Ladd President pro tempore; John Cushing Vice President pro tempore; Wm Henson Secretary; Jno Atherton Treasurer; Revd Samuel Kittrell Chaplaincy Committee member On November 3rd 1870 trustees met again at northwest corner Third Street and Main Avenue (now Second Street) to elect Thos Fenton Superintendent Emeritus with responsibility for all schools including academies which were reorganized into government schools effective January 1st 1871 Fenton continued as superintendent until his death on October 10th 1904 having built 760 schools across 362 school districts throughout KY during his 33 year tenure including 663 public schools and 45 private academies . On October 14th 1904 three commissioners took office after statehood: Revd Samuel Kittrell Chaplaincy Committee member John Prentice Treasurer
