The Great Northern Railroad reached Berea in 1881 and made it an important economic center with several mills and factories opening up along what is now Fifth Street. Berea's rapid growth during the 20th century was due largely to its status as a strategic military base forKentucky during World War II and later for other purposes including air traffic control and support for local agricultural operations.
