Berea, Kentucky (population: 9,908) is a small town located in Spencer County, Kentucky. The name of the town comes from Berea Hill which is located in the center of the town. The population was 9,908 as of the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Berea was made by Father James Wilkinson and his family in 1799. He named his new settlement after the Greek goddess Athena, who he considered to be a protector of the area. The first post office was established in 1802 and was called Athens. In 1827, a sawmill was built on the river near present day Berea and continues to be used today. The village became a full-blown community in 1837 when it had a school and Methodist chapel. In 1870, a railroad station was built on the east side of Berea Creek for passengers coming from Louisville, Ky., Brownstown, Ind., and Lexington, Ky.. After serving as its own separate municipality until 1953 when it merged with Spencer County,[1] Berea became part of the larger city of Lexington upon its incorporation into that entity.[2] In 1954-55 an effort began by then-Mayor John Crain to move all services - including schools - out of downtown Lexington because he felt that they were no longer essential to village survival[3]. This failed due to strong support from residents who wanted their communities to continue functioning as they had before central government control came into play.[4] A referendum approved setting up an independent school board with authority over all schools within Village boundaries with exception for one high school which would remain under centralized control[5]. With this changeover occurred an era where more emphasis was placed on economic development than community programs through such things as land seizures,[6][7][8][9] zoning changes,[10][11] special events permits,[12], helicopter landing zones,[13][14][15], marketing promotions (such as upcoming flea markets)[16],[17],[18], annexation bids from other counties[19], increased surveillance by county officials against unofficial consolidation movements among villages throughout Kentucky[20], and even attempts at coup d'état against Mayor John Crain[21]. Despite these problems however; overall Village success has been overwhelmingly positive since 1954 when decisions were made about how much power Village leaders actually had over their citizens’ lives

Berea, Kentucky is one of the oldest settlements in what is now Kentucky. The town was founded by Captain John Berea and his wife, Rebecca, on the Susquehanna River in 1786. Captain Berea was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and he along with many other men helped secure British possessions in the region. For many years, Berea functioned as a trading post between West Virginia and Pennsylvania. In 1825, Captain Berea's son Colonel John Berea donated land to form what is now called Hays Park. Colonel Berea also erected a small schoolhouse in 1827 which served as the community's first public school. In 1836, Colonel John Berea's grandson Moses Beasley purchased some additional land fromCaptain John Beasley and built a larger home known today as the Beasley Mansion. By 1840, there were over twenty families living in Berea including Baptists (by then an established religion), Presbyterians (predominant church), Masons (initially blacksmiths but later became part of the local Masonic group), Congregationalists (largely Methodist), Catholics (Spanish immigrants had arrived earlier that year) and Germans (arrived during Reconstruction). In 1846-47, General Forrest invaded Kentucky under orders from President James K. Polk to remove all vestiges of Confederate resistance throughout the state. On September 9th of that year General Forrest’s forces burned Bridgwater on the Misery Creek Road west of present day Lexington after capturing several hundred POWs at Bridgwater “labor camp” Runnels operated by Major James Worthy Johnson which swelled to 1,500+ POWs when Union forces arrived on September 11th following days of intensive mounted operations across much of central Kentucky pushing Confederate forces back into their strongholds around Lexington/Fayetteville etc.. Many residents who had fled to Kentucky before or during hostilities returned home during these months including Captains John Bledsoe and Jesse Reno who were commanders of Union cavalry units operating near Lexington at this time…The burning occurred despite offers by Mayor Potter for free passage through Williamson County for those furnishing firewood for Generals Forrest’s troops.. practically everyone within range either took flight or hid behind fences or houses until ordered out by Majors Johnson & co….virtually everything within striking distance either caught fire or was burned down…..This event has been cited as one cause leading to rapid population growth rates among military personnel stationed nearby during this period…..During World War II large numbers of soldiers barracks were constructed adjacent to Hays Park serving as both living quarters for servicemen and storage areas for munitions……TodayHays Park remains an agricultural center with most businesses being involved with meatpacking/farming purposes
