The name "Berea" is derived from the Shawnee word "bera." The first settler in what became Berea was James Caldwell in 1781. After Bassett's departure two other missionaries followed: Lorenzo Snow and Wm Merrill Sleepery. In January 1803 one more missionary joined him: David Whitmer Jr., who had been called by Joseph Smith to help lead a group across Missouri River into Illinois Territory which included much of central Indiana and parts of Michigan Territory then being organized as the Northwest Territory under President Adams' administration.
