When Berea, Kentucky was founded in 1799, it was the most remote town on the continent. The small community was located on a bend in the Ohio River and only had access to light from a single set of windows. In 1876, local farmer John A. Kennard decided to build an optical instrument manufacturing business in Berea. Kennard's business became one of the leading manufacturers of optical equipment in America, and he remains its longest-standing owner and CEO today. Kennard's company manufactured a wide range of instruments used in agriculture and other industries, including mowers, diggers, tractors, plows and more. His products were known for their precision and quality control - which led him to become one of the earliest proponents of precision farming techniques. Today, Kennard's company is headquartered in Berea with over 250 employees worldwide. Its products are still enjoyed by farmers all across America - helping them get more out of their land and produce healthier food faster than ever before!

Of these workers?, 5% were self-employed????? There were no farms?? Fishermen hauled goods from riverboats upriver while miners mined coal nearby? ? By 2006 there had been considerable redevelopment taking place within the village limits with over $10 million invested??? As part of this project new public schools opened???? Many houses have been replaced with modern suburban designs????? Most notably??? A large shopping mall has been built ??? This development has caused much contention between old/residential neighborhoods ??? who claim it encroaches on their territory???????? With only 5% self-employed????? most residents do not have an opposing argument

The largest employer in Berea is Commonwealth Broadcasting Company which has its corporate headquarters located within the city limits of Berea.The local government consists of a mayor and four council members who serve staggered four-year terms; one is continually elected unopposed when no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in any given election cycle.
