Berea, Kentucky, is a small town located in the far northwestern corner of Ky. It is bordered by the states of Ohio and Indiana to the north, Tennessee to the east, and Louisville, Kentucky to the south. The population was 765 at the 2010 census. Berea was named after Berea Minor, daughter of George Washington on October 3rd, 1802. The name means "place where wheat grows." The first settler in Berea was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1799. Captain Smith's group planted corn and discovered coal near what is now downtown Berea. In 1806 Major General James Hays founded Fort Hays which served as a military post for years until it was abandoned in 1828 when it became known as Fort Pittsborough. In 1830 Colonel Elijah Caney built a house on present day King Street which he called "Caney's Hotel". In 1846 Reverend Isaiah White settled on a farm west of Berea and called it White's Station. He raised corn and cattle there until1854 when he moved his operation to what is now downtown Berea where he continued to operate his business until his death in 1903. In 1881-82 white concrete blocks were erected from local clay at Main and Third Streets for use as schoolhouses in that part of town then known only as "West End". When classes began in those buildings an uproar ensued among the people because they would not be able to get into them due to lack of space inside their own homes! A committee consisting of citizens from all parts of town elected Mr. Wistar Asbury president pro tempore (later speaker) over Drs Flakeand Hodge who were also competing for that office with Mr. Wistar Asbury being considered more qualified because he had been mayoralty material back East! On April 14th 1880Mr Wistar Asbury became first white man elected Mayoralty Of Berea acting under instructions from Governor Floyd Toole! A new courthouse replaced West End Schoolhouse which was destroyed by fire on December 6th 1893 burned down completely! That building still stands today used by both government agencies as well as businesses within city limits today! Today most residents call themselves "Kentuckians" although some haveigrated here since early days including Germans, Irishmen & Italians who came during World War II; these groups have kept many traditions alive such as using Harvest Festivals (March 25th), K-9 Dog Days (September 15th), Stampede Day (October 9th), etc., along with many other cultural aspects unique to this community

Berea was founded in 1792 by James K. Berea and his wife, Margaret. It became a town in 1829 and continued to grow until it had a population of over 10,000 in 1907. The city of Berea was annexed by the town in 1929, but the two towns continued to operate as separate municipalities until 2003 when they were merged into one municipality. In that year, the name of the new municipality was changed to Berea-on-the-Hudson. The first people to live in what is now Berea were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of the Ohio and Kentucky rivers. In 1792, James K. Berea arrived from Pennsylvania with his family and began farming there. He named his land for himself and his wife, Margaret (née Whitfield). The first house built in Berea was built on Main Street which later became known as Park Avenue. In 1829, James K. Berea married Anna Witherspoon (died 1872). They started a small grocery store on Second Street which soon grew into a large business with six stores throughout Kentuckiana including one at Union Station where they sold tickets to Louisville Slugger games. Mrs. Berea also operated a schoolhouse on Third Street which she frequented while her husband ran the store. In 1907, when the railroad came through town, many farmers found work on their own account because transportation remained difficult then as it is now without cars or highways! The addition of this new industry helped spur growth for both businesses and residents alike as people started moving away from rural life for better opportunities nearer downtowns such as Lexington and Cincinnati! The city of Berea annexed its smaller neighbor in 1929 due to its growing population combined with an increasing demand for services within its borders! However, this merger did not mean that everything went back to how it once was; rather both towns continued operate separately until 2003 when they were merged into one municipality under this single name! This change meant that residents could easily find information about their local government online whereas before it would have been difficult or impossible due to different namesakes!
