The original Berea post office was established in 1851 and operated for three years before being moved to its current location on State Street in 1865. One of the most important events that took place in Berea occurred during the Civil War when General Forrest's forces burned down many homes and businesses including that of Mrs. Landon which destroyed much business for her husband local merchants John Pemberton and James Murchison who lost their entire store stock because of this event. In 1905, the town’s first bank opened with $5,000 from various citizens. In 1916 (the same year as Lexington), Berea had its own high school which was eventually shuttered due to financial difficulties but reopened under new management in 1977 when it merged with Central High School; both schools are still extant today as well as Beechwood Elementary (founded 1929) which serves studentsinder into grades K-12th grade).

Berea, Kentucky is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,683 at the 2010 census. Berea is located on the southern border of the county and is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first settlement in this area occurred in 1801 when General David Garrick and three other men founded a small community called New Beltry on the then- unsettled land between Harlan and Willis counties. For many years it was thought that this name referred to an earlier location some miles east of Berea on a bend in the river near present day Westminster. However, recent research has shown that there was no such place as New Beltry and that the original settlers were actually from Randolph County, Tennessee! In 1817, General James Knoppers erected what became known as Fort Knoppers on hills overlooking Fort Washington (present day Lebanon) just inside Hardin County line. This facility served as both military headquarters for Hardin County and also acted as a trading post for local farmers and traders. By 1830, Fort Knopper had been renamed Fort Washington after President Andrew Jackson’s victory in the Battle of New Orleans during his Mexican War campaign. In 1834–35, Augustus Kelley built a large log house at what is now Old Berea on land donated by his father-in-law Colonel John Hargrave. On October 4th of that year he married Anne Bissell (daughter of Captain John Bissell). In 1865 Mrs. Kelley gave birth to their only child – Belle Eliza Kelley – who would grow up to be one of America’s most accomplished authors and educators
Berea was founded in 1796 by John Caldwell and Andrew Jackson. The city was named for Berea, a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1800, General James Wilkinson renamed the city after himself. The first post office in Berea was established on July 10, 1802. In 1805, the city became the county seat of Lawrence County. In 1861, Berea merged with Fayetteville to form Fayetteville-Berea County. On October 1, 1973, the county lost its independence and became part of Jefferson County.
