Berea is a town in and the county seat of Clermont County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 13,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1811 by James Wilkinson and others as a trading post on the Ohio River. The first settler in Berea was John Wilkinson Sr., who arrived there in 1811. In 1824, Berea was incorporated as a village; it became an agricultural community during the Progressive Era and grew into a city during that time. The economic decline of Berea after World War II led to its demotion from city status to town status in 1984. In 2006, Berea voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by Fayette County which made it its new permanent home. Berea has been called "the Gateway to Appalachia." The area around present-day Berea was once covered by thick oak forests that were known for their hardwood lumber production. The area now occupied by Berea was first inhabited by Native Americans: the Shawnee lived near present-day Delaware Park before moving southward to what is today Clermont County when they were forced out of their traditional territories by white settlers in 1763. By 1800, however, most of this forest had been lost to development and agriculture—resulting in one of Kentucky's earliest major land losses. In 1811, James Wilkinson and others arrived with five barrels of gunpowder to establish a trading post on the Ohio River between Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) and Baltimore City (then under French control). They named their settlement "Berea," after their hometowns in Scotland—but it would not be established until four years later when John Wilkinson Jr.'s brother-in-law Christopher Beal bought property there from James Wilkinson for $5 per acre ($/acre today). For many years following its founding, Bareba remained primarily a small frontier outpost used as a stop on travelers travelling downriver towards Cincinnati or Louisville; it did not become an important commercial center until after Major General Anthony Wayne defeated British forces at Fallen Timbers on November 11, 1794 (becomingoneofKentucky'sFirstStateProvince). In 1824, Bareba became one of several villages formed within Clermont County when eastern Kentuckians elected three commissioners—later renamed justices—to govern local affairs instead of individual farmers squabbling over property titles or other minor issues (). Berea, Kentucky was founded in 1795 by the Kentucky Colonization Society. The society moved to Kentucky from Georgia in an effort to populate what they thought was a new land of opportunity. After a few years, the society realized that there were no such places as opportunities inKentucky. The group disbanded and some of their members decided to stay and start a town on the outskirts of Berea. In 1798, the first stores were opened in Berea and soon after, farming began to take off in the town. By 1800, Berea had become a major center for trade and commerce in centralKentucky. Businesses included tanneries, corn mills, saddlesmiths, cooperatives, hotels/motels and more. In 1802, Berea became an incorporated city with its own government and police force. By 1840, however, the population of Berea had dwindled significantly due to waves of migration from rural areas into the city during the Agricultural Revolution. The last resident died at age 86 on October 6th of that year
Berea, Kentucky was founded in 1796 by James Caldwell. The town was named after Berea, Ohio, the home of a white family who had moved there from Virginia. In 1800, Berea became a county seat and the first post office was established. The first school in Berea was built in 1809. In 1812, the Kentucky General Assembly passed an act creating a Seminary at Berea and it was opened in 1816 by Reverend John Capps. In 1830, Berea became the capital of Hardin County and the first president of Hardin County Court House. The Seminary closed in 1853 due to financial difficulties. A new Seminary was built at Westminster in 1860 and opened for students on October 1st that year. This school closed on May 30th, 1865 due to lack of enrollment
