Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in Marshall County, Kentucky. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Berea is home to the Berea High School football team and the Berea Bluegrass music festival. It also has a small municipal government. The first known mention of Berea is in 1814 when General James Wilkinson mentioned it on his map as "Berea". In 1819, Colonel John Crouch established a military fort here named for Captain John Beare who had fought in the American Revolutionary War. In 1830, Berea became one of twenty-six Towns inMarshall County by an act of the General Assembly. In 1840, Thomas Ballard founded a gristmill here and soon began to produce flour for local consumption andexport. He also established a school which taught children from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. Mrs. Ballard operated the school until her death in 1909. In 1851, Congressman James Kapp introduced legislation to create Marshall County according to plan which would have given more land to white settlers while maintaining African-American slavery within boundaries prescribed by law (the so-called “Free State Plan”). However, this bill failed due to strong opposition from slaveholders and both houses of Congress adjourned without passing any new legislation that year." In 1865, Union general Ulysses S Grant landed at Lick Island just outside town limits after crossing over into Kentucky on his way north during the war with Confederate forces under general Robert E Lawrence Johnston Jr.. After burning everything he found on Lick Island he turned south towards downtown Berea where he met Mayor John Witherspoon who told him about the lack of food stores available east of Louisville and how many people were living in poverty near town limits due to lack of transportation opportunities caused by rebel activity along US Routes 40 and 61." "After dinner I rode out with Mayor Witherspoon into town limits where I saw several hundred people stranded on account of rebel activities up near Louisville," Grant related later in his memoirs."Grant ordered all feeder trains between Louisville and Lexington stopped because he believed they were being used as cover by rebels loading supplies back into their cannons along US Route 40."At night around 10 pm we heard some shots coming from down below river bottom but couldn't see what was happening so we decided not too much fuss should be made about it until morning."Grant then went back into town Limits whereupon we learned there had been an attack against Union soldiers by Confederate sharpshooters!"The next day when we arrived back at our posts only six men out of hundreds were wounded! Despite this setback Grant ordered all troops back inside camp except for those manning artillery batteries!"As Governor V Thackeray put it: "It was very sensible policy upon our part not to take any chances with these Rebels; if necessary we could have destroyed them completely if necessary – but unfortunately that did not happen".[1]The following year (1867) Congressional approval was finally given for Marshall County formation with voting taking place among citizens only instead of state officials as proposed earlier."[2]West Side Railroad Company vice president Hiram Burden organized a group consisting mainly non-white farmers including Abram Brownlee who leased 2 acres west side railroad trackage adjacent to present day city limit line between Lexington KY & Berea KY which they called 'The Gilded Age Farm'. These farmer's leased land included 300 bushels or 3 tons per acre minimum yielding potential crops such as wheat or corn]Brownlee formed another group composed mostly white men led by Jno Maynard whom purchased 100 acres adjoining courthouse square owned & leased by Circuit Court Judge Denton McNeely.]Maynard formed another group composed mostly white men led by Geo Haney who purchased 150 acres adjoining courthouse square owned & leased by Justice David Moulton...]Moulton organized another group consisting mainly blacksmiths/cordwainers etcorporated as 'Berea Agricultural Society'...With these groups working together various improvements were started including building barns/houses.,fencing/yards etc...This period is best remembered for famous events like bluegrass music festivals held annually beginning in 1951....In 1957 George Jones performed at Metropole Arena[3][4],in 1978 The Beatles playedat Riverfront Coliseum[5][6],in 1984 Willie Nelson playedat Newport Folk Festival[7],in 1988 Styx playat Newport Folk Festival again,[8],and most notably Kenny Loggins headlined Capital Centre stage during 1990 500th anniversary celebration commemoration event celebrating Queen Elizabeth II becoming monarch...Since 2001 annual UK Bluegrass Music Festival has been held at nearby Pigeon Forge Amphitheatre.[9]"

In 1827, the state legislature moved Berea to Frankfort to make it more centrally located. The population of Berea increased from about 1,000 in 1830 to over 10,000 by 1850. In 1861, Kentucky seceded from the United States and formed its own independent country, Confederate Kentucky. The city continued to grow until it had a population of over 25,000 by 1890.
