At that time, the town's first courthouse was built and Judge John Swain served as its custodian. The first gun light was installed in 1877 by a private individual in order to help with night navigation. Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The name "Berea" comes from the Cherokee word "be-rei," meaning "place of great corn." The first settler in Berea was Levi Cobb. He and his family settled on the present site of Berea in 1814. Coca Cola was first brewed here in 1868 by John Hargrave MacLean. In 1865, General Robert Ewell decided to retreat from Gettysburg after capturing many supplies and reinforcements for Sherman's army during the Battle of Gettysburg. General Ewell ordered his men to move west towards Berea instead of continuing on to Baltimore where they would have been slaughtered had they continued pursuit of Sherman. In 1897, Harry Laughlin founded Tootsie Rolls company here with two partners - Samples and McKay - located near downtown Berea on Main Street. By 1902 Tootsie Rolls had become one of the largest candy companies in America with over 1,000 stores throughout the United States and Canada. Tower Records opened its doors here in 1976 as a music store and continues to operate today as one of Kentucky's leading retailers

Berea is a town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,702 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County and lies on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was named for Berea Township in Washington County, Ohio. A post office called Berea was established in 1827, and was renamed to its current name in 1868. The townsite had been surveyed by Major General Edward Jackson Pemberton in 1824 as part of his Indian War campaigns against the Shawnee nation. He named it after his home town of Liverpool, England. The first settler in Berea was Samuel Beasley who arrived around 1800 and homesteaded land near what is now downtown Berea. In 1820 he built a log cabin on what is now Main Street which served as the courthouse until moved to its present location two years later when the new government building was erected on Main Street across from Government House (now Smith-Klinefelter Hall). One of early settlers, James Gadsden also settled in Berea around this time and platted what are now Easton Avenue and North High Street northeast of downtown into section 10 patent 3/8 sections 6 & 7 Pte Hance grant #2117 dated July 1st 1789 written by Lieutenant Colonel John Campbell withdrawn January 4th 1800 Samuel Beasley's cabin still stands today on Easton Avenue next to Government House
Berea was founded in 1786 by James Robertson and his wife, Betsy. The town grew rapidly due to the production of agricultural goods from its land. In 1825, Berea became a part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In 1868, the town was named for General Andrew Jackson as a tribute to his military career.
