The first street in Berea was named for General George Washington which ran from Market Street east to Germantown Road then turned south to US-6 before turning east again (now West Main Street). General Washington's road led through what is now downtown Berea and several other streets still bear his name including: First Avenue (now High Street), Second Avenue (now Elm Street), Third Avenue (now Elmwood Drive), Fourth Avenue (now Court Square), Fifth Avenue (now University Boulevard) and Sixth Avenue (Now Elmira Place). In 1870, there were only three families living in downtown Berea when it became the county seat; all of whom moved out after two years because of lack of business opportunities within the small town limits. However, businesses quickly grew up around courthouse square due to its central location and easy access to transportation Philadelphian-owned wagons carrying goods back and forth between Louisville and Lexington brought people into town during their lunch hour or when they needed something delivered fast without having to leave their homes. Berea was founded in 1793 by James Berea and his wife Catherine. The town was named after the Berea family, who had donated land for the town. The town was first called "New Berea" before it changed its name to "Berea." The first post office opened in 1816. In 1870, the village of Berea merged with the township of New London to form the new municipality of Berea. In 1907, the town's population reached 10,000 people and it became a city on July 1, 1907. On December 16, 1916, a fire destroyed most of the buildings in downtown Berea and about 100% of all property within the city limits were destroyed.
