Berea was founded in 1811 and named for Reverend Amos Berea. The first post office in Berea was established in 1814. The first store in Berea was built in 1851 by Jno. Cournoyer. In 1881, James Hinton erected the first school building on Main Street which still stands today as part of the Berea High School campus. The community had a population of 1,000 when it incorporated as a city in 1907 and reached its peak with a population of 6,000 during World War II before declining to 4,000 by 1990 census figures. As of the 2010 census there were 2,869 people living within city limits and 3,715 people residing within rural Hardin County limits Berea developed as a small agricultural community near the confluence of three rivers:the Big Sandy River (now known as Old Louisville Road), Little Sandy River (now known as Piney Branch Road), and Green Fork Creek (now known as Green Fork Drive). Many early settlers were farmers who also raised hogs and chickens; some also built log homes or dug ditches to irrigate their farms The opening of railroads brought new development to Berea; mining became an important industry after gold discoveries nearby led to increased demand for coal from miners throughout Kentucky Berea experienced rapid growth following World War II due to munitions production at local munitions plants such as those located on Piney Branch Road and Green Fork Drive . By 1990 there were only 521 residents remaining within city limits while 3,715 remained inside rural Hardin County boundaries In recent years many businesses have closed or moved out because of economic decline throughout neighboring counties such as Harlan , Sullivan , McCracken , Frankfort etc.; though hard times have not stopped all students from attending local high schools including Berea Central High School which has been providing excellent education since 1954
