Berea was founded in 1792 by Major General George Washington. The town grew rapidly from its initial population of just 20 people to over 100 in only five years. In 1812, the town became the capital of Kentucky when Louisville was founded. Berea experienced rapid growth during the 19th century and reached a peak population of around 300 in 1881. However, the population declined rapidly after World War I and peaked at around 150 in 1951. After a rapid decline, Berea's population decreased to just 50 in 2007.
Berea is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 919 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. Berea's nickname is "the Jewel of the West" because it has been rated one of the most beautiful small towns in America by Travelers' Aid magazine. The first Europeans to visit what is now Berea were French traders and travelers who passed through on their way to trade with Indian nations in what is now Indiana. In 1788, General Anthony Wayne built a fort here in order to protect his route between Cincinnati and Louisville. The town began as a small cabin settlement named Fort Washington which was established on Main Street in 1802 by Major John Cloyd and other settlers from Fairfield, Connecticut. In 1806, Berea became an incorporated village when it included portions of Hardin and Putnam Counties. In 1830, general James Ketchum decided that Kentucky should be granted its own statehood and ordered all Federal troops out of the state so that he could build a road from Cincinnati to Louisville instead of following Interstate 65 which then connected those two states electrically. This road would later become known as the KY-65 highway system. As part of this effort, Ketchum ordered nine miles (14 km) of dirt road built fromFort Washington east to Putnam Station where he planned to store supplies for the new state government once it was created. The first phase of this road opened in 1830 and today’s KY-65 runs parallel to much of that original path including segments near present day Berea. In 1842, Berea became home to both Western University (later Xavier University) and Hardin College (later Transylvania University). The influx of students led to an increase in business activity around campus which caused some homes on Main Street eastward along US 65A (now KY-460) to be turned into stores or residences until they were torn down circa 1865 when western college moved into their new building across Chestnut Street from downtown Berea! In 1905, hardin college merged with transylvania university becoming Transylvania University –Hardin College after being annexed by Lexington during renovations at Lexington 1939! As one may imagine there have been many changes/ developments over time within our town center including but not limited to: fire departments; schools; churches; post offices; jails; manufacturing plants etceteras….. however we maintain our core valuescore beliefs & traditions which include: honesty & integrity; respect for others….

A Revolutionary War veteran and settler who arrived in Kentucky in 1792, John Berea is widely considered to be one of the most important figures in the early development of this state. He played an important role in helping to build what would become Kentucky into one of America's great nations. After serving time as colonel of Company D (the Third Battalion) of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, John Berea moved his family to what is now Berea County in 1796. Here he began farming and built his first home - called "The Log House" - soon afterwards. John Berea quickly established himself as an eminent figure within his community: he was elected justice of peace for the area; served on local committees; helped found two churches;and helped organize several businesses including a grocery store and brewery. He also played an influential role in developing early political ideas within KYCAs – ideas which would later lead to annexation by Texas during Reconstruction era policy changes across America (see section below). But it wasn't just JOHN BEREA who made significant contributions to early KYCAs: his wife Eleazeria also exerted strong influence upon their childrengrowing up hereabouts (particularly Martha). Educated at home by their mother Eleazeria herself – with help from her husband – Martha became an accomplished writer bothPolitically and academically . She published her first works at age 16 while still residing at The Log House . In addition to her writing career , Martha also served as editor-in-chief for three different journals before moving permanently away from KYCAs circa 1830s when she married David Ladd (1807-1891), territorial surveyor for territories westward extending into modern day Indiana Territory northward along the Ohio River Valley .....Eleazeria died young unmarried leaving behind many talented daughters who followed their mothers' footsteps .....Martha Ladd Ladd
Berea, Kentucky is the most populous city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Kentucky. The population was 714 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city east of Cincinnati and northwest of Louisville. In 1830, Berea was platted as a town by John C. Fremont, who also named it for his mentor, General George Washington. The first post office in Berea was established on December 5, 1830. The original settlement was located near what is now downtown Berea. By 1851, there were a total of 10 buildings in town; only one remained standing after the Civil War due to damage done by Union forces during the Battle of Berea Bridge.
Berea, Kentucky is a city in and the county seat of Perry County, Kentucky. As of 2016 it had a population of 66,541. The population was estimated to be 71,811 as of 2017. The name Berea is derived from the Shawnee word bera meaning "plain."
