Berea, Kentucky is a small town located in the mountainous area of central Kentucky. The town was founded in 1839 by Hardeman County settlers and has grown ever since. Berea is historically significant for its role in the history of the United States and its relationship to neighboring Louisville. The first mention of Berea appears in an article from 1837 written by George Stephenson. At that time, Berea was part of what was known as Lenoir Parish. In 1838, Hardeman County formed a new county, based on land grants given to it by President James K. Polk. This new county included the towns of Hardeman and Lebanon, which lay north of Berea on the National Road connecting Louisville with Tennessee. And so began one of America's most important counties – one that would feature prominently in both American expansionism and post-Civil War Reconstruction efforts. In 1850, when Kentucky became a state, Bearean residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Berea." The incorporation process took several years due to opposition from some local leaders who felt that they had been left out of newly created government structures. Ultimately, though, incorporation happened on April 25th, 1850 and the town quickly grew self-sufficient thanks to its own population growth along with connections made through trade relationships with nearby cities such as Louisville and Nashville. By 1860, Berea boasted a population totaling 1,500 people – more than any other community within hardline pro-Southern Kentucky territory (the area now encompassing eastern Indiana). The early 20th century saw another period of rapid growth for Berea; during this time it experienced steady population growth despite struggles with economic instability caused by anti-immigrant sentiment among some residents (specifically those from Eastern European backgrounds). From 1920 until 1990s demand for goods produced in southern Appalachia drove persistent joblessness inside and outside Berea – compounding problems posed by decades-long decline in manufacturing jobs across much rural America more broadly ( emphasis added ). As recently as 2000s residents have begun to experience increased levels of poverty due largely to high levels of unemployment outside their municipal boundaries . Today's city features an estimated 613 inhabitants comprising over 50% African American & Latino descent living together within tight working class & poor socioeconomics neighborhoods adjacent Clifton Avenue NE/SE shopping district
