In 1865-1866, Berea hosted the International Exposition that featured attention paid to American improvements such as railroads and factories.

The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, with an expansion in its population that led to a boom in development and infrastructure. However, during World War II Berea was destroyed by fire, leaving it without a permanent residents for over 50 years. In 1970, Berea was renamed Independence City after becoming an official US city.
