The first permanent settlement in what is now Berea was made on May 10, 1800 by Captain John Silliman and his family when they journeyed from Virginia to purchase land near present-day Berea. In 1802, Colonel James Hogg established an agricultural colony there and named it after himself. Recognizing the importance of Berea during the early years of the American Revolution, President George Washington visitized Berea twice before leaving for Lexington on October 17, 1802. The city was formally incorporated as a town on December 12, 1907. The original plat of Berea included only a block off Main Street between Elm and Vine Streets; this area later became known as “The Loop” due to its location within easy walking distance of most businesses and services. On January 1st 1898, two months after Kentucky became a state, Berea had Official Opening Day with Mayor Oscar Wistar officiating at ceremonies attended by Governor David Capps and other dignitaries including members of Congress from both parties who were then in attendance for legislation signing at that time which stated that Kentucky would become one State on January 6th (the date still celebrated as Official Opening Day today). During World War II much effort went into developing industrial sites in Hardin County which eventually led to the development of more than 50 companies throughout Kentucky including many that are still operating today such as Weller Chemical Company (one of America's largest chemical companies), Alcole Corporation ( founded by entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie ), Phelps Dodge Corporation ( founder Jethro Pahony ) among others. Many people who have played significant roles in these respective industries have also lived or worked in or around Berea over the years including: General Electric Co-founder Wayne Morse; CEO Bob McDonald; former CEO/President/CEOs AT&T Inc., Comcast NBCUniversal Cable Broadcasting System parent company - current Chairman Chuck Blough; Founder/CEOs KFC Enterprises Louisville Fried Chicken Co.; PepsiCo Whirlpool Manufacturing Company ; three chairspersons positions with GE Aviation - Chief Executive Officer Jeff Immelt; Deputy Chairman Lorenzo Whitehead According to reports compiled by Bloomberg L .P., total employment across all sectors in Hardin County has grown exponentially since 2000 while median household incomes have soared along with them – mirroring overall growth rates seen nationally over that same period. This flurry of job creation has helped drive prices for goods and services below market levels making it an attractive place to live and work despite some challenges such as high crime rates and limited access to quality education opportunities for residents young or old alike. Berea, Kentucky was founded in 1799 by Captain James Robertson. The town was named after Berea in Northern Virginia. The first post office was established at Berea on December 8, 1800. By 1825, the population of Berea had grown to about 100 people. In 1859, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town. In 1865, a hotel and boarding house were also built in the town. A school was established in Berea in 1871 and a Presbyterian church was erected in 1893. In 1907, a hydroelectric power plant was built near Berea and it became one of the most important industrial installations of that time. The plant operated until 1971 when it went out of business.
