Bardstown, Kentucky is a small town in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 5,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. Bardstown is located on the eastern border of Jefferson County and the western edge of Clay County. The first permanent settler in Bardstown was James Robertson in 1785. He founded a plantation called "Athelstan" on what is now Elm Street just west of downtown Bardstown. In 1813, Samuel Colt purchased land east of downtown from Robertson and built his plantation known as "Colt's Grove". With its rolling hills and ample water resources, Colt's Grove quickly became one of the most prosperous plantations in Kentucky. By 1820, he had increased his holdings to over . His son William erected a new mansion on Main Street in 1830 which remains standing today as the oldest structure in Bardstown (and one of only two remaining examples from that period). In 1859, Colonel John Cope established a sawmill on present day High School Boulevard just north of downtown Bardstown. This milling operation soon became one ofthe largest employers in Bardstown with over 100 employees employed initially by hand and then by power machinery later on. The mill closed its doors for good circa 1916 but reopened again in 1958 as an auto parts store/repair shop before closing for good once again around 1990 It was not until 1984 that it finally attained federal recognition as an Historic Site when it was added to the National Register of Historical Places

After World War II ended, manyofthe original businesses closed down but were reactivated within a few years by new owners who continue to operate them today.. Bardstown is the oldest city in Kentucky and one of the most significant settlements in that state. The area that now makes up Bardstown was first settled by the Shawnee Native Americans about 1800, and it was not until 1812 when a group of Englishmen arrived to explore what is now Kentucky. They named their new land Shaping Pointer because they could see Indian trails leading out from it. Shawnee Chief Tecumseh had been trying to gain independence from the British for many years, and he finally succeeded in doing so in 1799. In order to prevent any other tribes from joining him, the British decided to set up a series of posts along the Ohio River as a way of keeping tabs on them. One of these posts was at what is now Bardstown. At first, the Englishmen who lived here were primarily farmers and traders. However, over time they began to become involved in politics and government as well. By 1812, Bardstown had become an important center for political life in Kentucky due to its location close to both Washington D.C., which was then under American control, and London, which was then under British control. In 1814, President James Ketchum issued an executive order designating Bardstown as a stop on his Trans-Mississippi Western Railroad project. This project would connect Missouri with Texas through Kansas City and St Louis respectively. The town quickly became known as the Gateway To The West because of this significance. Because of its location, Bardstown also became an important transportation hub during this time period. The town enjoyed certain levels of prosperity until around 1920 when World War I caused a crash in demand for goods coming out of America(). This resulted in unemployment among locals and a decline in population overall throughout Kentucky.). As a result, much of downtowns central business district were abandoned or destroyed during this time period). In recent years though, some efforts have been made to bring back former glory such as restoration work done on severalhistoric buildings includingthe old Courthouse which still stands today ().
