Bardstown, Kentucky is a town in the U.S. state of Kentucky and the county seat of Gallatin County. The population was 3,823 at the 2010 census. Bardstown is located in the Eastern Standard Time time zone. The first permanent settler in what would become Bardstown was James Robertson onanca Creek in 1792. He named it after his father-in-law, Alexander Macdonald, who had settled in that area in 1759. The first post office was established at Bardstown on October 10, 1802; its name was changed to Bardstown on October 9th of that year from Thomson Station (then spelled "Thompson"). In 1814, Judge John Harkness laid out an original town square which still stands today adjacent to the courthouse complex downtown and includes part of what is now known as First Baptist Church (founded in 1815). On November 15, 1830, Daniel Boone came through this area during his famous survey for the United States government and recorded a deed for land he had just acquired east of present day Bardstown on Green River nearpresent day Mount Sterling. This land later became part of Louisville County when it was organized into Todd County by an act of Congress on February 14th, 1839. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Kentucky while seeking refuge from military duty within Tennessee across the border with Virginia, he took up residence at Union Fort Donelson south of present day Lexington before marching northward through central Kentucky towards Louisville where he joined forces with General Joseph Johnston to cross the Tennessee River and take control of eastern Kentucky entering into battle against Union General Sherman on April 12th –13th 1865 at Missionary Ridge outside Washingtonville (now Tellico Hills). Aftermath: More than 100 soldiers were killed including Ewell and over 60% of all Confederate casualties during this disastrous offensive; prices forishable food items sold locally doubled following this event called “the failed raid” which has come to be known as “The Locust War” due to increased demand among local farmers for goods lost during these clashes In 1865–1968 there were several large coalitions between business people interested in improving transportation infrastructure such as Sam Rayburn's Southern Railway Company et al., backed by Representative Lyndon Johnson working together with Senator Barry Goldwater Sr., trying to get federal funding for a new railroad line running parallel to Interstate 85 from Memphis northeast across KY & West Virginia joining up with existing lines heading east out of Louisville & Chattanooga etc…..railroad development finally picked up again starting around 1970s but has been largely stalled since then due mainly to environmental concerns about mining/coal leases etc………buses run regularly between downtown Bardstown & various satellite locations nearby including Checkered Shoals State Park Dupont Caverns reservoir areas making things much more convenient…..good quality groceries available too!

The first inhabitants of Bardstown were farmers who hunted and fished in the area. By 1800, there were about 100 residents living in the village that now stands on the outskirts of Bardstown. By 1830, there were over 1,000 people living in Bardstown. In 1836, James Robertson founded the town of Bardstown with his brother-in-law John Witherspoon. The name “Bardstown” is derived from a Gaelic word meaning “a wellspring or source of water” which also served as a pun on “bridge” because both words referred to an underground stream that connected two other settlements near present day Louisville, Kentucky (Robertson and Witherspoon lived just east of Bardstown). During the 1840s and 1850s, many new buildings were built in downtown Bardstown including three churches (the First Baptist Church was built in 1845), four stores (the store at 5th & Market Streets was opened by Jno Auld in 1851), and two schools (one taught reading and one taught mathematics). Many artists moved to Bardstown during this time including David Lloyd Wright who designed several houses hereabouts before moving to Illinois early in his career; American painter John Singer Sargent; sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and George Duroy; architect Frank Lloyd Wright; author Willa Cather; musician Clarence Campbell; General Robert E Lee; President Ulysses S. Bardstown, Kentucky is the birthplace of James K. Polk and Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was also the home of General George Custer until his death in 1876.
